Ruling jeopardizes candidates' campaigns

A directive issued Friday by the Ohio Secretary of State may curtail the campaigns of at least two November hopefuls.

Secretary of State Jon Husted has ruled that a person who withdraws his or her candidacy cannot subsequently file a new declaration of candidacy and petitions for the same office in the same election.

That likely means Toledo City Council hopeful Daniel Angel and Toledo Municipal Court hopeful John Coble will not be permitted to run for those offices. Both men withdrew candidate petitions, then later refiled.

The Lucas County Board of Elections has twice postponed votes to certify those candidates’ petitions as it waited for guidance from the Secretary of State.
