TEMPERANCE-- Voters in Bedford Township rejected a 1-mill, 10-year property tax to fund road improvements, repairs, and maintenance. Unofficial vote results in Tuesday's election show the levy request failed 2,875 to 3,356.

Township leaders sought the issue because of poor road conditions. It would have generated about $980,000 annually for a road repair and maintenance program that involved contracting with the Monroe County Road Commission to have two employees dedicated to duties ranging from fixing potholes to plowing snow on secondary roads and in subdivisions.

Also, money would be made available to match state and federal road improvement grants.
