4 certified for place in District 5 primary
1/5/2012The Lucas County Board of Elections certified four candidates Wednesday for the 5th Congressional District primary in March and approved two GOP write-in candidates for county commissioner.
U.S. Rep. Bob Latta (R., Bowling Green) and Robert Wallis were approved to run on ballot in the Republican primary. Mr. Wallis of Convoy, Ohio, in Van Wert County is a retired instructor at the University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima. He ran unsuccessfully against Mr. Latta for their party's nomination in the 2010 primary election.
Also certified for the House seat are Libertarian candidate Eric Eberly of Bowling Green and Democrat Angela Zimmann of Holland, who is unopposed in the primary.
The board also certified the petitions filed by Republicans John Marshall and Thomas Stamos, who are seeking the party's nomination as write-in candidates to face Democratic incumbent Peter Gerken in the November general election for county commissioner. Mr. Stamos of 2638 Wicklow Rd. is the brother of Constantine Stamos, who is awaiting a decision from the Ohio Secretary of State on whether he will be on the ballot.
The Lucas County Board of Elections tied 2-2 last month on certifying him for the ballot.
Mr. Marshall of 5850 Durbin Rd. is a retired general contractor who spent 13 years in the Air Force.
He ran unsuccessfully in November for Sylvania Township trustee.
The board of elections in Cuyahoga County is scheduled to meet Monday to act on the certification of candidates for the newly redrawn 9th Congressional District.
U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo), U.S. Rep Dennis Kucinich (D., Cleveland), and Graham Veysey of Cleveland filed petitions in Cleveland to run for the office in the March 6 Democratic primary.
Mr. Kucinich, 65, announced in September he would oppose Miss Kaptur, also 65, after the Republicans put the two Democrats together in a district that hugs the Lake Erie shoreline.
Mr. Veysey, 29, also of Cleveland, is a media producer who has a company called North Water Partners.
Steven Kraus of Huron, Ohio, and Samuel "Joe the Plumber" Wurzelbacher of Springfield Township are seeking the Republican nomination. Libertarian Sean Stipe of Lorain also filed to run for the seat.
