Ohio AG to push for legislation that would give longer sentences for repeat violent offenders

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio's attorney general will push for longer sentences for multiple violent offenders, backed by statistics showing a small percentage account for a large number of violent crimes.

Mike DeWine says he will work with Gov. John Kasich's administration to develop legislation that will be introduced this fall. It follows his request to an Ohio State University associate professor to analyze crime statistics.

The Columbus Dispatch reports the data found that people convicted of three or more violent offenses account for less than 1 percent of the state population but 33 percent of all violent crime convictions over nearly four decades.

DeWine says the study shows there is predictability in the danger of repeat violent offenders.
