Collins to announce mayor candidacy

D. Michael Collins, Toledo city councilman, plans to announce his candidacy for mayor at 5:30 p.m. today at the closed West Toledo District Police Station, 2328 West Sylvania Ave.

He has served on City Council since 2008 and he worked as a police officer in Toledo for 28 years. In addition, he served as the president of the Toledo Police Patrolman's Association for 10 years.

Mr. Collins has a bachelor's degree and a master's degree, both in business administration and both from the University of Toledo. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

During the announcement event, Mr. Collins is expected to give an opening statement, then will take questions.

Mr. Collins joins six other candidates, who have announced their plan to run for mayor on the Sept. 10 primary ballot:

● Incumbent independent Mike Bell.

● Democrat Anita Lopez.

● Democrat Joe McNamara.

● Independent Alan Cox.

● Libertarian Michael Konwinski.

● Republican Opal Covey.
