Incumbents remain safely among top 12 in Toledo council election

Four Toledo City Council incumbents running to keep their seats all were safely among the 12 top vote-getters as early returns came in for the primary election Tuesday.

With 66 of 226 city precincts reporting, veteran councilman Rob Ludeman led the way with 5,447 votes, while former Mayor Jack Ford, also a past councilman, held second place with 4,383.

Incumbents Steven Steel, Adam Martinez, and Shaun Enright all were comfortably in line to move on to the general election, but among them, only Mr. Steel was in the upper half of the 12 leaders among the total field of 17.

Behind Mr. Ludeman and Mr. Ford, the top six were political newcomer Sandy Spang, Mr. Steel, challenger Theresa Gabriel, and board of education veteran Larry Sykes.

The others poised to advance to the Nov. 5 general election were Bill Delaney, James Nowak, Joseph Celusta, and Sean Nestor.

Needing a rebound in the later returns were Ernest McCarthy, James Martin, Alfonso Narvaez, Ron Johns, and Joshua Fowler.
