COLUMBUS — Gov. John Kasich has appointed Dr. Bruce R. Saferin, a Sylvania Township podiatrist, to the 12-member State Medical Board. It licenses and regulates doctors and other medical professionals in Ohio.

The term will last through 2017. One vacancy remains on the panel, which also includes Dr. Lance A. Talmage, a Toledo obstetrician and gynecologist.

Last fall, Dr. Saferin hosted a news conference in his surgical center with Josh Mandel, then the Republican U.S. Senate candidate, to push repeal of the Affordable Care Act, commonly called Obamacare. The law is about to kick into higher gear. It mandates that individuals acquire coverage by Jan. 1.

A review of campaign finance records in the secretary of state’s office showed Dr. Saferin contributed $100 to Mr. Kasich’s re-election campaign this year.
