Ohio governor visits to talk to auto industry execs

Kasich keen on helping train workers

DETROIT — Ohio Gov. John Kasich made his annual trip to the North American International Auto Show on Monday, saying it’s important to have face-to-face meetings with auto executives who have operations in Ohio.

“We come every year because [the auto industry] is an important part of Ohio’s economy,” Mr. Kasich said. “The auto companies are critical to us, and we think we have a very good relationship with them. I come every year. It’s important that you have these individual and personal relationships.”

Mr. Kasich, a Republican, met with officials from Chrysler Group, Ford Motor Co., and Honda. One topic of discussion was work-force development. Mr. Kasich said he wants to work with companies and schools to help train people for manufacturing jobs. That’s one area where Mr. Kasich believes he can work with Chrysler Group.

“The more we can help them with this I think the better off they will be. I have a nice relationship with [Chief Executive Officer] Sergio [Marchionne]. We’re thrilled with what’s been happening in Toledo.”
