City reaches deal with AT&T for land

Agreement ends impasse over 0.19 acre for Dorr St. project


The Collins administration reached a tentative agreement to buy a small piece of property from AT&T Ohio that is needed to widen part of Dorr Street in West Toledo, city officials said Tuesday.

The city and the company had reached an impasse over the sale of less than 0.19 of an acre so the city could build center median islands and designated turn areas along the roads between Byrne Road and Westwood Avenue.

Councilman Lindsay Webb last month said AT&T wanted $60,000 for the property but the city had offered $30,000.

Ed Moore, the city’s commissioner of engineering services, said the tentative agreement could avoid the need for eminent domain, which council had authorized the city to use. The terms of the agreement were not released.

AT&T Ohio is a subsidiary of AT&T Inc., the global telecommunications giant that is the largest mobile telephone provider in the United States.

The Collins administration Tuesday asked council to consider starting the eminent domain process against three other property owners for the same project.

The city has a tentative agreement with the owner of 3338 Dorr to buy 0.1 acre. Mr. Moore said he still asked council to start the eminent domain process in case that deal crumbles. The city is also starting the eminent domain process for small portions of 3454 Dorr and 3468 Dorr.

The roadway project will cost $5.7 million. The city’s share is $614,000 and the remainder is being paid for by the state.
