FREMONT — Sandusky County Commissioner Matt Damschroder will resign his seat to become a Fremont firefighter.

Mr. Damschroder will resign Friday and will no longer pursue a second term. He withdrew from the May 6 Republican primary election.

He said the Sandusky County Republican Party’s central committee will appoint someone to fill the remainder of his term, which expires at the end of this year.

Fremont’s policies forbid an employee from taking part in partisan elections or holding a partisan office, he said.

“This Fremont job is something I’ve been trying to get even before I became commissioner,” said Mr. Damschroder, who has been a member of the Lindsey Volunteer Fire Department for about 10 years.

The Republican primary includes one write-in candidate, Charles Schwochow, for the commissioner seat. Democrat Wilson Forney also seeks the spot.
