Maltby's 2 goals boost Red Wings

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Detroit coach Mike Babcock would love Kirk Maltby to score more.

Maltby had a pair of second-period goals and Henrik Zetterberg added a goal and an assist as the Red Wings rallied to beat the Phoenix Coyotes 5-2 on Saturday night.

"Kirk Maltby can really shoot but he chooses not to most of the time," Babcock said.

Maltby broke a 2-2 tie with 25.5 seconds left in the second when he one-timed a pass from Zettenberg from the right faceoff circle over Mikael Tellqvist's extended glove.

Maltby also had scored at 11:26 of the second period, redirecting Chris Chelios' blast from the right point past

Tellqvist to tie the game 2-2.

"Whoever I'm playing with usually gets on me to shoot more," Maltby said. "It's part of playing safe and making the safe play. It's something you've got be conscious of but it's all part of going out there and playing with confidence."

Jiri Hudler and Brett Lebda also scored for the Red Wings, who have won three of their last four. Chelios added two assists.

"We have great depth on this team and tonight we proved that, rolling four lines and having a lot of guys score," Zetterberg said

"People don't understand what a fine line it is between swimming and drowning in this league," Babcock said.

Zetterberg leads the NHL with 17 points and has at least one point in each of Detroit's first nine games, a career-best scoring streak.

Steven Reinprecht and Derek Morris scored for the Coyotes, who lost all three games of their abbreviated homestand. Phoenix has lost five of six since opening the season with a 3-2 home win over St. Louis.

"They outskated us on the ice, their top guys played at will and we seemed to be overwhelmed," said Coyotes coach Wayne Gretzky.

Detroit made it 4-2 with

15:03 to go when Tellqvist went behind the net to leave the puck for defenseman Ed Jovanovski. Matt Ellis beat Jovanovski to the puck and passed it out front to Lebda for the shot into the vacated net.

Zetterberg made it 5-2 with

5:22 remaining on a rebound of a shot by Tomas Holmstrom.

Jiri Hudler gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead 4:37 into the game, tapping a rebound into the net from the left edge of the crease as two other Detroit players crashed the net.

The Coyotes evened the score when Peter Mueller stole the puck from Pavel Datsyuk just outside the Red Wings zone and hit Reinprecht in stride.

"It's not our young guys," said Coyotes captain Shane Doan, who remained without a goal for the season. "Our young guys are playing great. They are doing everything we could ask of them."

Canucks 4, Blue Jackets 1

COLUMBUS - Ryan Kesler, who played at Ohio State, scored two goals and goaltender Curtis Sanford had a solid game in his first start of the season to lead Vancouver.

Markus Naslund and Kevin Bieksa added goals for the Canucks, who had lost their last two games. They won despite being outshot 20-0 during one lengthy span.

Kesler stretched his points streak to three games - he had three assists in Vancouver's last two games.

Columbus hadn't given up two goals in the first period in its first seven games.

The Blue Jackets only scored one goal despite having six power-play chances. Rick Nash ran his goal streak to three games when he netted his own rebound during a 5-on-3 at 2:38 of the second period.

WILD 3, AVALANCHE 2

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Mikko Koivu scored with 3:04 remaining to help Minnesota beat Colorado.

With both teams stagnant in the final period, Koivu grabbed the puck out of the corner, started like he was going to carry it behind the net and then made a lightning quick move to the short side and simply bulled his way out in front.

He stuffed the puck past a surprised Peter Budaj, lifting the Wild to its seventh win in the first eight games.
