Kiprusoff shuts out Wings

CALGARY - Miikka Kiprusoff made 38 saves in his first shutout of the season, Alex Tanguay scored and the Calgary Flames beat the Detroit Red Wings 1-0 last night.

Kiprusoff was at his best in the third period as Detroit outshot the Flames 13-2. Twice the Red Wings hit a goal post in the final 20 minutes of Kiprusoff's 25-career shutout, which comes 64 starts after his last - a 1-0 win over Minnesota on March 27, 2007.

Tanguay scored midway into the first period as the Flames won their third straight and moved within one point of the Northwest Division-leading Minnesota Wild, setting up the game for first place tomorrow at the Xcel Energy Center. Calgary also pulled into a tie with San Jose and Nashville for fifth in the Western Conference.

Detroit dropped to 1-6-1 in its last eight games and first without all-star defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom, who sprained his knee Monday.

Tanguay's fluke goal at 11:54 of the first period came from behind the Detroit net.

After snapping a 16-game scoring drought with a pair of goals Wednesday, Tanguay got his 14th of the season when his centering attempt hit Detroit defenseman Brett Lebda in the arm and ricocheted past an unsuspecting Chris Osgood, who made 25 saves.

NOTE: Flames players wore No. 18 on their helmets in memory of 2007 fifth-round draft pick Mickey Renaud. The captain of the Ontario Hockey League's Windsor Spitfires died unexpectedly Monday.

STARS 5, OILERS 2

DALLAS - Jere Lehtinen scored two goals, Marty Turco stopped 20 shots, and Dallas maintained its mastery over Edmonton to sweep the four-game season series.

Brenden Morrow added a short-handed goal, Loui Eriksson also scored, and Jussi Jokinen contributed two assists for Dallas.

Dustin Penner's power-play goal at with 12:01 remaining ended Turco's bid for his 33rd career shutout, and Curtis Glencross added a goal at 14:10 to pull the Oilers to 4-2.

But Mike Modano's empty-netter with 1:59 left, his 17th of the season and career 524th, pushed Dallas' lead to 5-2 and closed out the Oilers.

Avalanche 3, Coyotes 2

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Cody McLeod scored in the 12th round of a shootout to give Colorado a victory over Phoenix. It was the longest shootout ever for both teams.

Paul Stastny scored in his first game back in the Colorado lineup, Marek Svatos also scored, and Tyler Arnason and John-Michael Liles had shootout goals to help the Avalanche snap a five-game winless streak.

Phoenix's Derek Morris scored with 2.8 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Steven Reinprecht also scored, and Joel Perrault and Mike York had shootout goals for the Coyotes.
