Billups no longer player on Beijing Games list

DETROIT - Chauncey Billups pulled himself out of consideration for a spot on the USA Basketball team in the Beijing Games, a person in the NBA told The Associated Press yesterday.

Billups, an All-Star point guard for the Detroit Pistons, might havee had a hard time making the team anyway with guards such as Jason Kidd, Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul and Deron Williams available for the roster.

LAS VEGAS - Oakland Raiders wide receiver Javon Walker remained hospitalized with a concussion and a battered face, one day after he was beaten, robbed and left unconscious on a Las Vegas street after partying.

•CHICAGO - Former Chicago Bears fullback Roland Harper admitted he acted as a front man in a fraud involving a $1.5 million Chicago Public Schools landscaping contract reserved for minority firms.

Harper, 55, appeared before U.S. District Judge John W. Darrah and pleaded guilty to a single count of mail fraud.

NEW YORK - Viewers stayed tuned to the U.S. Open even as it spilled over into the work week.

The dramatic playoff between Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate earned a 7.6 overnight rating and 20 share from 2-4:45 p.m. ET on NBC, the network said. That's just 11 percent less than the 8.5 overnight rating drawn by Sunday's fourth round.

The first two hours of the playoff drew the highest cable rating ever for golf with a 4.2 on ESPN.

Delta High School has hired Brett Smith as football coach. Smith comes to Delta with a football background, including more than 14 years of high school coaching experience.

He is a graduate of the University of Toledo and Bowling Green. He coached at Bowsher High School in 2005 and also worked as the offensive coordinator and later as the defensive coordinator at Anthony Wayne.
