CLEVELAND - Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera was named the American League Player of the Week for the period of play ending yesterday.

Cabrera had hits in all six games last week, batting .464 with three doubles and 13 RBIs. He went 5-for-6 and drove in six runs in the Tigers' 19-4 rout of Kansas City July 21.

Detroit acquired Cabrera in a blockbuster, eight-player deal with the Florida Marlins on Dec. 5. The Tigers will pay him about $152 million over the next eight seasons.

For the year, Cabrera is batting .294 with 17 homers and 74 RBIs.

Outfielder Matt Joyce, a former Mud Hen, was named the AL Player of the Week earlier this month.
