Red Wings 3-0 on road after win over Blues

ST. LOUIS - Tomas Holmstrom and the Detroit Red Wings kept their road winning streak going at the expense of the St. Louis Blues.

Holmstrom scored for the fourth straight game, and Pavel Datsyuk added two assists in the Red Wings' 4-3 victory over the Blues last night.

The Red Wings improved to 3-0 on the road and ended the Blues' season-opening home winning streak at three. Detroit is 4-0-1 after opening with a loss to Toronto.

"We've been a pretty good road team," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "To be a championship level team, you have to be good in both places."

Henrik Zetterberg, Nicklas Lidstrom and Johan Franzen also scored for Detroit. Keith Tkachuk, Brad Boyes and T.J. Oshie scored for the Blues.

Lidstrom said he knows Holmstrom will get his goals.

"Holmstrom is good at finding an open spot," Lidstrom said." He doesn't need much to put the puck in the net."

Zetterberg, back in the lineup after missing two games because of a strained groin, opened the scoring midway through the first period.

Holmstrom made it 2-0 on a power play early in the second, one-timing Marian Hossa's pass past goalie Manny Legace. Detroit has scored at least one power-play goal in its last four games. The Red Wings added a power-play goal late in the period, with Lidstrom whistling a slap shot past the screened Legace for a 3-0 lead.

"We were star struck for two periods," Legace said. "We watched them skate around."

The Blues bounced back with a power-play goal with 31.9 seconds remaining in the period when Tkachuk deflected a pass behind goalie Ty Conklin. Tkachuk has 507 career goals. He has scored in every game this season and eight straight dating to last season.

Boyes cut the lead to 3-2 just after coming out of the penalty box. He wristed a shot past Conklin midway through the third for his fifth goal of the season.

Franzen restored Detroit's two-goal lead with his fourth of the season at 14:09.

Blues coach Andy Murray praised the Red Wings for their effort.

"They've got a tremendous amount of talent and skill," Murray said. "Our game wasn't up to our standards tonight."

With Legace off for an extra attacker, Oshie scored his first career goal with 1:24 remaining.

NEWARK, N.J. - Martin Brodeur made 21 saves for his 98th NHL shutout, and John Madden scored two goals for the Devils.

Brodeur is five shutouts away from Terry Sawchuk's NHL record of 103 and eight wins shy of Patrick Roy's league mark of 551.

PHILADELPHIA - Former Philadelphia star Jeremy Roenick scored the deciding goal in a shootout for San Jose to hand Philadelphia its season-opening sixth straight loss. Joe Pavelski also scored for San Jose in the shootout.

OTTAWA, Ont. - Craig Anderson made 41 saves - 26 in the third period - in his first start of the season for Florida, and Rostislav Olesz and Nathan Horton scored 48 seconds apart early in the first period.

Blackhawks 3, Oilers 0

CHICAGO - Nikolai Khabibulin made 23 saves for this 39th career NHL shutout and Chicago ended Edmonton's season-opening winning streak at four games.
