Red Wings take Ferraro, Tatar in second round

DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings selected forwards Landon Ferraro and Tomas Tatar in the second round of the NHL draft.

Detroit took Ferraro yesterday with the 32nd overall pick and Tatar with the 60th. The Red Wings on Friday traded the 29th pick to the Tampa Bay Lightning for the 32nd and 75th (third round) picks.

The Wings took forward Andrej Nestrasil with the 75th and defenseman Gleason Fournier with the 90th (third round). They took defenseman Nick Jensen with the 150th (fifth round) and right wing Mitchell Callahan with the 180th (sixth round).

Detroit took defenseman Adam Almqvist with the 210th (seventh round).

The Wings previously have had success drafting high-end talent in the lower rounds, including Nicklas Lidstrom, Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, Tomas Holmstrom, Johan Franzen and Jonathan Ericsson.

COLUMBUS - The Columbus Blue Jackets were willing to wait - a little while, anyway - for John Moore.

After making a trade to move down 10 spots and another to move up five, the Blue Jackets grabbed the offensive-minded defenseman from Chicago of the United States Hockey League with the No. 21 pick in the first round of Friday's NHL draft in Montreal.

The selection brought a roar from a large crowd who came out to Nationwide Arena to watch the Blue Jackets' draft.

Moore is 6-foot-2 and weighs 192 pounds and has committed to Colorado College. He had 14 goals and 25 assists in 57 games last season with Chicago.

Whether Moore is able to play right away or until he's had at least a year or two of college or minor-league seasoning, the Blue Jackets wanted a defenseman who can be the triggerman on the power play.

Moore, a native of Winnetka, Ill., was ranked sixth among all North American skaters by NHL scouts.

REINSDORF/COYOTES: A group led by Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf has offered to buy the Phoenix Coyotes for $148 million and keep the team in Arizona.

The offer, submitted in bankruptcy court documents on Friday, is $64.5 million less than the bid by Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie, who wants to move the team to Southern Ontario.
