Defiance s Niese honored

Defi ance native Jon Niese was named IL pitcher of the week.

Niese, a left-hander who pitches for Buffalo, the Triple-A affi liate of the New York Mets, allowed just 10 hits and two earned runs while covering 17 innings in a pair of starts last week. One week ago he allowed five hits and two earned runs in eight innings against Charlotte but did not earn a decision.

On Sunday, Niese allowed just five hits in throwing a nineinning complete-game shutout against Rochester.

Sunday s victory improved Niese s record to 4-6 this season, while lowering his ERA to 4.32. He also has 75 strikeouts.

Columbus third baseman Andy Marte was named the IL s hitter of the week after batting .458 with a pair of home runs, six RBIs, and six runs scored in seven games for the Clippers.
