DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers have hired Mike Maroth to be the pitching coach at Single-A Lakeland for the 2012 season.

The team announced the move Monday.

In 2003, Maroth became the first major leaguer since Oakland’s Brian Kingman in 1980 to lose 20 games in a season. Maroth finished that year 9-21 in his second of five-plus seasons with the Tigers. He bounced back to win a combined 25 games the next two years.

The native of Orlando, Fla., split 2007 between Detroit and St. Louis, finishing his career in the majors with a 50-62 record. He started his professional career in the minors with the Boston Red Sox organization and finished it trying to break back into the big leagues in 2008 and 2010 with Kansas City and Minnesota.
