FORT MYERS, Fla. — Oft-injured reliever Joel Zumaya has told the Minnesota Twins he’ll have reconstructive surgery later this month on his right elbow in his latest comeback attempt.

Twins general manager Terry Ryan confirmed that Zumaya made the decision this weekend. He’ll need a year to recover and rehabilitate.

Zumaya, who left Detroit to sign a one-year contract for $400,000 guaranteed, tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow on his first bullpen session of spring training. He didn’t pitch in the majors last season after recovering from a different elbow injury.
