DETROIT - Surrounded by Joe Louis Arena employees in red jerseys bearing his name, as well as current and former teammates, Nicklas Lidstrom formally announced his retirement today.

Lidstrom, the Detroit Red Wings captain, ends his career after 20 seasons, all with the Red Wings. He leaves the NHL as one of the most decorated defensemen in league history, winning four Stanley Cups and seven Norris Trophies as the league's top defenseman.

"It's time to retire," Lidstrom said.
