Sylvania native signs American Hockey League contract

Former Northview High School standout forward Alden Hirschfeld, who played last season for the Toledo Walleye, signed an American Hockey League contract today.

Hirschfeld, who helped lead Northview to the state title game in 2006, signed with the Grand Rapids Griffins on Wednesday.

Hirschfeld, 26, spent the majority of his second professional season with his hometown Walleye last year. Hirschfeld picked up 29 points with nine goals and 20 assists in 49 games for Toledo. The 6-foot, 203-pound forward ranked second on the Walleye in assists and was sixth overall in scoring.

Hirschfeld also made 13 appearances with the Griffins last season, notching a goal and an assist in 13 games. He will remain in the Detroit Red Wings' organization, which is Toledo's NHL affiliate.

The Sylvania native has accumulated 10 points (5 goals, 5 assists) in 51 career AHL games between the Griffins, Providence Bruins, and Portland Pirates.

Hirschfeld, a 2006 Northview graduate, went on to a productive career at Miami University. He was a team captain for the RedHawks and helped lead them to a CCHA championship in 2011. Hirschfeld appeared in 134 games over four seasons with Miami and tallied 70 points. He scored 35 goals to go along with 35 assists.

Hirschfeld will be on a “two-way contract” with Grand Rapids, which is Toledo's AHL affiliate. If Hirschfeld were to return to the ECHL he would play for the Walleye. Players on two way contracts can move back and forth between the ECHL and AHL.
