As foreclosure filings in the third quarter rose nationally from the spring and from a year earlier, filings in Ohio are dropping, a report released today shows.

Ohio had 29,645 cases in the July-through-September period, or one for every 171 housing units, and ranked 13th among states, according to RealtyTrac Inc., a real estate data firm in Irvine, Calif. The number of cases was down 5 percent from the second quarter and 11 percent from a year ago.

Filings in Michigan are rising, with 37,026 filings in the third quarter, or one for every 122 housing units, placing the state eighth among states, RealtyTrac found. That was up 9.5 percent from the second quarter and 22 percent from a year ago.

Nationally, foreclosures rose 22.5 percent in the third quarter, totaling 937,840, or one for every 136 housing units, according to RealtyTrac.

Just for September, filings fell 4 percent nationally from the month before, and were down 13 percent in Michigan and 4 percent in Ohio, but all were higher than the same month a year ago, the report shows.
