A majority of homeowners on a Sylvania Township street have petitioned for annexation to the city of Sylvania.

The Board of Lucas County Commissioners received the Arbor Way petition March 12 to annex 6.3 acres to the city. The commissioners have scheduled a hearing at 1:30 p.m. May 21. Both the city and township may present their case regarding the annexation at that time.

The 33 homes included in the petition are west of Whiteford Road; 21 homeowners signed the petition.

Bill Dryer, a Sylvania resident who owns rental property on the street, said he started the annexation process because he and neighboring residents want a sewer system to replace septic tanks. Tank replacements and leach-field maintenance have become a financial burden, he said.

“When the township installed the water lines, we talked to them about putting in the sewers. They said it would happen in about five years,” Mr. Dryer said. Thirteen years have since passed, he said.
