SANDUSKY — The Douglas Company, a Toledo-based general contractor, has begun extensive renovations on the historic Hotel Rieger in Sandusky.

When the $5.5 million project is completed, Rieger Place will house 37 apartment units for senior citizens, along with first-floor retail space and a community deck on the third floor.

The five-story structure, built in 1912, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The building is owned by Buckeye Community Twenty Two LP.
