Sisters of St. Francis endorse charter backing peaceful society

7/10/2004

The Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania have formally endorsed the Earth Charter, a declaration of fundamental principles for building a just, sustainable, and peaceful global society in the 21st century.

The Sylvania nuns said the endorsement was inspired by St. Francis of Assisi, "whose deep love of God opened to him the intrinsic relationship among all people, creatures, and creation."

The religious order will seek to apply the Earth Charter's principles in its programs and policies and to promote education of the charter, which was the product of the Earth Charter Commission after a decade-long, global discussion. It was approved in March, 2000.
