Yom Kippur services set

Yom Kippur observances began last night with the recitation of the Kol Nidre, or "All Vows" prayer, and continues with local services. Although it is the Jewish year's most solemn day, there is an undertone of joy for the faith that God will forgive sins, accept repentance, and provide blessings of health and happiness in the new year.

The seven-day festival of Sukkot begins Thursday and marks God's protection of the Israelites during their 40-year trek in the desert. Many take their meals in a sukkah - an open-air structure.

Here is a list of Yom Kippur and Sukkot services:

Sukkot: Erev Sukkot, Wednesday, 7 p.m. Mincha; 7:03 p.m. Candlelighting; 7:30 p.m. Ma'ariv; Thursday 7 p.m. Mincha; 7:30 p.m. Ma'ariv; 8:01 Candlelighting.

●Congregation B'nai Israel, 2727 Kenwood Blvd.: Morning Service, 9 a.m.; Mincha, 5:45 p.m.; Neila, 7 p.m.; Ma'ariv (fast ends), 7:56 p.m.

Sukkot: 6 p.m. Thursday, 7:15 p.m. Friday.

●The Temple-Congregation Shomer Emunim, 6453 Sylvania Ave., Sylvania: Morning Service, 10 a.m.; Family Service, 2 p.m.; Blowing of the Shofar, between 6:15 and 6:30 p.m.; Break Fast follows blowing of the Shofar.

Sukkot: Erev Sukkot, 5:30 p.m. Wednesday; Morning Service 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
