Toledo native elected by monks to lead St. Meinrad Archabbey
1/2/2005ST. MEINRAD, Ind. Monks at St. Meinrad Archabbey in southern Indiana have elected a new leader for the Roman Catholic monastery and seminary.
The Right Rev. Justin DuVall, elected Friday, is the ninth abbot and sixth archabbot to serve since the Benedictine monastery was founded in 1854.
Archabbot-elect DuVall, 53, a native of Toledo, came to the monastery about 50 miles east of Evansville as a college seminary student in 1969 and joined St. Meinrad in 1973.
He succeeds Archabbot Lambert Reilly, who stepped down on Dec. 15.
Indianapolis Archbishop Daniel Buechlein, also a St. Meinrad monk, will preside at the new archabbot s blessing Jan. 21.
The monastery, which is home to about 110 monks, is one of two Benedictine archabbeys in the United States.
