5/21/2005

Berkey Congregational Christian Church is celebrating its 150th anniversary this month, honoring a heritage that dates back to April 28, 1855, when it was organized as the First Christian Church by Stillman C. Post.

For the first 15 years, the church s 31 charter members held services in a school house on Sylvania-Metamora Road. The first church building was constructed in August, 1870, at a cost of $1,985.35, and stoves were added in 1887.

In 1960, the congregation voted to change its name to Berkey Congregational Christian Church and in 1961 members approved the proposed constitution of the United Church of Christ.
