Activist priest to speak on Path to Peace at UT

The Rev. John Dear, a Jesuit priest and author, will speak on Walking the Path to Peace in a World of War, Wednesday at the University of Toledo.

A former executive director of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, Father Dear has written or edited 20 books on peace and justice issues.

He worked as a Red Cross chaplain in New York City after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and has served in Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, the Middle East, the Philippines, and Northern Ireland.

In 1993, Father Dear was arrested at a North Carolina air force base for hammering an F-15 fighter bomber, seeking to beat swords into plowshares. He spent eight months in North Carolina jails and has been arrested over 75 times in acts of nonviolent civil disobedience for peace.

Father Dear s talk, sponsored by the Interfaith Justice and Peace Center, will be at 7 p.m. in room 1019 in the UT Driscoll Center. The talk is free and open to the public.
