Local churches to discuss foreclosures

5/17/2008

The growing number of home foreclosures in the Toledo area will be a topic of discussion Monday at Monroe Street United Methodist Church.

About 800 members of local congregations will gather to address the foreclosure crisis during a meeting of TUSA - Toledoans United for Social Action. The group is composed of more than 20 diverse congregations in Lucas County who want to address critical community problems.

More than 1,800 foreclosures were filed in Toledo in the first quarter of 2008, and many of the foreclosed homes become vacant and abandoned properties that plague the city, TUSA officials said.

The meeting will also address the issue of discipline in schools, including the 6,500 suspensions in the Toledo public schools in the 2006-07 school year.

TUSA members believe discipline problems deprive students of valuable classroom time and lead to excessive out-of-school suspensions.

The meeting will start at

7 p.m., with sign-up at 6:30 p.m., at Monroe Street United Methodist Church, 3613 Monroe St.
