FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Rev. Alexander Golitzin has been nominated as Bishop of Toledo and the Bulgarian Diocese of the Orthodox Church of America.

Father Golitzin, a priest and a monk, was elected as a candidate for bishop at a conference held here last weekend. The other candidate was the Rev. Paul Gassios, pastor of St. George’s Orthodox Cathedral in Rossford.

The nomination will be voted on at a yet-to-be determined date by the denomination’s Holy Synod, after which Father Golitzin will be consecrated. A native of Tarzana, Calif., Father Golitzin has a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of California at Berkeley, a master’s degree from St. Vladimir’s Seminary, and doctorate from Oxford University, where he studied under Metropolitan Kallistos Ware.

Father Gassios, who has been an Orthodox priest more than 15 years, will continue to serve as pastor of the cathedral in Rossford.

The position of bishop became available when Archbishop Kyrill Yonchev died in 2007.
