Two Ohioans will embark Sunday on a 2,477-mile canoe trip from Ohio’s Sugar Creek to the Gulf of Mexico to raise money for African orphans and pastors.

Ben Swartz, 21, of Botkins, Ohio, and Jon Detweiler, 22, of Dalton, Ohio, plan to paddle through five rivers and 10 states to raise money for IRIS Ministries in Mozambique, which was founded by Rolland and Heidi Baker in 1980 and now supports nearly 10,000 orphans.

The canoeists expect to be back from their trip in late November.

The canoeists are hoping to raise $210 per mile in sponsorships for Bible school training for pastors, and food, housing, and medical help for children.
