NEW YORK — The National Council of Churches’ governing board has named Clare Chapman as interim general secretary. She has been carrying out those duties since Dec. 31. The previous general secretary, Michael Kinnamon. left at the end of the year on the advice of his cardiologist, who said the strains of frequent travel and other demands of the office were detrimental to his health.

Ms. Chapman joined the council staff in 2007 and had been interim general secretary from Sept. 1, 2007, until Jan. 1, 2008. Before joining the council she served for more than two decades as associate general secretary for program and administration of the United Methodist Church’s General Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns.
