NLRB impounds ballots on Duquesne union effort

PITTSBURGH -- The National Labor Relations Board has impounded ballots cast by Duquesne University's part-time faculty until the Pittsburgh school's appeal of a unionization vote is settled.

The private Roman Catholic school is appealing the board's rejection of its claim that it should be given a religious exemption from an agreement with the United Steelworkers union in May to allow the election.

The balloting, conducted by mail, began June 22 and the votes were to be counted Tuesday.

The union contends most of Duquesne's roughly 130 part-time faculty members want to form a bargaining unit.
