Former Detroit mayor to speak in Toledo
8/18/2012Kwame Kilpatrick, the former mayor of Detroit, will speak at a workshop seminar titled Recovering from Failures on Aug. 25 at the Worship Center in Toledo.
Kilpatrick last spoke at the Worship Center on June 18, when he discussed his time as mayor, his experiences in prison, and his reconnection with God.
"I had a moment where I could have done right, and I did wrong," he told the crowd. In a 2008 civil suit that cost Detroit $8.4 million, Kilpatrick was found guilty of obstructing justice after lying on the stand in a civil trial about his extramarital relations with Christine Beatty, his chief of staff. "All over the world I was an adulterer and a liar -- I'd never found myself a failure before," he said.
He served 99 days in prison and returned to prison in 2010 when a judge ruled that he had avoided reporting assets and turning over tax refunds that were meant to go toward restitution owed to the city of Detroit. On Aug. 2, 2011, he was released from his second prison term.
Kilpatrick's trial on public corruption charges is scheduled to begin on Sept. 6.
