Oregon’s Our Lady of Toledo Shrine celebrates its 20th anniversary this weekend with an open house today and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. The shrine at 655 S. Coy Rd. was established in 1992 by Sally Steadman, who died in 2009 at age 88.

Blade articles state that Ms. Steadman said she saw visions of the Virgin Mary 23 times in October, 1992, and they continued the rest of her life. From 1998 through 2004, Ms. Steadman hosted monthly gatherings to report messages she said Mary gave for the public.

The shrine is not officially recognized by the Roman Catholic Church, which considered Ms. Steadman’s visions to be “private revelations.” Ms. Steadman said in interviews that the shrine’s mission is to prevent abortions.
