Collected kosher food to create mall menorah

Chabad Toledo is turning its collected donations into a religious symbol for Hanukkah.

At 3:30 p.m. Dec. 9, the first night of Hanukkah, it will light Toledo's Community Menorah, the nine-light candelabra that represents the Jewish Festival of Lights, at Westfield Franklin Park mall. This year the menorah will be a “Canorah,” built from donated cans of kosher food.

After the holiday, the cans will go to the Jewish Family Service Food Bank.

To donate, look for cans with a “U” or a “K” inside a circle or star on the label — that indicates kosher preparation. Most needed are 15-ounce cans; 22-, 28- and 105-ounce sizes will also be used. Donations are requested to be delivered to Gan Yeladim Preschool, 3853 Woodley Rd., Toledo, or Chabad Toledo at 4020 Nantucket Dr., by Sunday. Financial donations are also welcomed.
