‘Art and the Sacred’ is Toledo Museum of Art director’s topic at St. Michael's

2/2/2013

Brian Kennedy, the director of the Toledo Museum of Art, will speak on “Art and the Sacred” at St. Michael’s in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4718 Brittany Rd., Toledo, on Sunday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Gregory P. Sammons, co-rector of St. Michael’s in the Hills, said that the topic is of special interest because of historical religious differences about art based on the biblical second commandment, which says not to make graven images. The Rev. Sammons says that in the Christian community he serves, the arts are celebrated.

Mr. Kennedy said that art can “open us to the sacred and the acceptance of mystery.”

The lecture is the second installment of the Common Grounds for the Community series of cultural events at St. Michael’s in the Hills. Toledo’s Masterworks Chorale will perform there March 16, and the church’s music director, Paul Haebig, will play an organ recital in May.

An $8 offering is requested at the “Art and the Sacred” event. A reception will follow.
