Toledo church hosts gun buyback

6/8/2013
BLADE STAFF

People’s Missionary Baptist Church, 1101 Heston St., will have a different kind of collection today, taking handguns instead of tithes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and paying $50 for one gun, a maximum of $100 for two or more. The firearms must be operable but unloaded.

The buyback program is a partnership between the city and several community groups, and the money to buy the guns comes from the Toledo Police Department’s law-enforcement trust fund.

Officials also will accept, but not pay for, unwanted ammunition, shotguns, rifles, BB and pellet guns, starter pistols, and visibly inoperable firearms, all of which will be destroyed.
