Compartiendo esperanza

NAMI of Greater Toledo and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Toledo are working together to address mental illness in the Latino community. Because of culture and religion, many Latinos see mental illness as spiritual possession or as punishment for sins. Priests are sometimes asked about exorcisms rather than about mental health resources. Also, some Latinos who are undocumented don't seek help because of fear of deportation, and people with no or insufficient insurance try to self-medicate. To address misperceptions, NAMI is offering Compartiendo Esparanza (Sharing Hope) & Suicide Prevention at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 728 S. St. Clair, July 19 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. A NAMI representative, speaking in English, will give information about mental health aspects. People who have experienced mental health challenges will speak and share in open dialogue. And priests will be available to answer questions. The event is free and lunch is included, but space is limited. To register, contact Anita Martinez-Folger at amfolger@namitoledo.org or call 419-243-1119, ext. 25.
