Family comedian

Will McDaniel, who is billed as a Christian comedian, gospel illusionist, and pizza connoisseur, will take the stage Thursday at 7 p.m. at Heritage Church of God, 3520 Strayer Rd., Maumee. The concert is free, but a love offering will be taken. On Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Christ's Church in Bowling Green at 14455 Campbell Hill Rd. will welcome Mr. McDaniel for a perfromance at its free carnival, which will also have a juggler, music, games, a free lunch, and inflatable amusements.

Holy Hens

The Toledo Mud Hens Home Plate Event is Sunday at 4 p.m., two hours before the Hens play the Pawtucket Red Sox at Fifth Third Field. This year's installment of the annual Christian-oriented program features Jason Hanson, a former Detroit Lions kicker, giving his Christian testimony, and speeches from other Christian players and coaches from both the Hens and the Sox. There will be question-and-answer opportunities with Mud Hens players and the team chaplain and a giveaway. Tickets (which include a free hot dog) can be purchased at the box office or by contacting Hannah Tyson at 419-725-9258 or emailing htyson@mudhens.com. The gates open Saturday at 3:30 p.m. After the game, children can run the bases and the club will shoot fireworks.

3-day Mission

“Ordinary Lives, Extraordinary Mission” is the title of an event taking place Sunday through Tuesday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Community, 8330 Lewis Ave., Temperance. John R. Wood, an eye doctor and Catholic speaker who wrote the book Ordinary Lives, Extraordinary Mission: 5 Steps to Winning the War Within, will talk on “Rediscover the Mission” Sunday at 6 p.m.; “Rediscover the Faith” Monday at 7 p.m.; and “Setting the World Ablaze” Tuesday at 7 p.m. The musical group Simply RC will perform all three nights. Admission is free.

Happiness

Bob Moyers, also known as “Mr. Happy,” of Liberty Center will host a meeting of the Happy Club Monday at 9 a.m. at Charlies Restaurant, 12407 Airport Hwy., Swanton. The Happy Club is part of his Center of Unconditional Love out reach mission, which distributes the “Be Happy Plan for Healthy People.” Attendees shoould have “a sense of humor and common sense,” he says. 150-minute pilgrimage

The Sisters of St. Francis, Sylvania, offer two dates for a mini-pilgrimage on the grounds of their motherhouse at 6832 Convent Blvd. Pilgrims will visit the shrines of St. Francis and St. Clare there and learn the history of both saints and of the sisters. Cost is $15 and includes lunch. The first pilgrimage is Thursday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and the second is Sept. 18, 10-12:30. Compartiendo esperanza

NAMI of Greater Toledo and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Toledo are working together to address mental illness in the Latino community. Because of culture and religion, many Latinos see mental illness as spiritual possession or as punishment for sins. Priests are sometimes asked about exorcisms rather than about mental health resources. Also, some Latinos who are undocumented don't seek help because of fear of deportation, and people with no or insufficient insurance try to self-medicate. To address misperceptions, NAMI is offering Compartiendo Esparanza (Sharing Hope) & Suicide Prevention at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 728 S. St. Clair, July 19 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. A NAMI representative, speaking in English, will give information about mental health aspects. People who have experienced mental health challenges will speak and share in open dialogue. And priests will be available to answer questions.
