Toledo-based union schedules merger vote

4/9/2003

About 250 representatives of the Toledo-based American Flint Glass Workers Union will converge on Pittsburgh from around the nation June 2 and 3 to vote on a proposed merger with the United Steelworkers of America.

If the merger is approved, Toledo will lose its only national union with local headquarters but will become home to a glass conference that will oversee representation of about 30,000 Steelworkers' members employed in the glass industry, said Tim Tuttle, Flint Glass Workers president.

The union has 12,500 active members in 130 locals. Pittsburgh was selected for the convention because it is where the Toledo union was founded in 1878 and is home to the Steelworkers, Mr. Tuttle added.
