Mich. Meijer workers reach tentative contract

8/11/2003

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Grocery giant Meijer, Inc., and the United Food and Commercial Workers union have reached a tentative labor pact for 36,000 Michigan employees.

The employees are now paid $6 to $18 an hour, union leaders said. The agreement reached Friday would raise wages 13 percent over 41/2 years.

That would make Meijer employees the highest-paid grocery workers in the Midwest, the union leaders told The Detroit News.

The employees will be able to vote on the contract through Sept. 2. Meijer has about 130 stores in Michigan.
