Kroger Co. officials plan to attend a public meeting May 30 in Maumee City Council chambers to discuss their application to construct a store on Reynolds Road at Dussel Drive on the site of a former car dealership.

However, the Cincinnati-based grocery chain has yet to purchase the property and still could decide not to go forward with the project.

"We are still doing our due diligence. We have not signed a purchase agreement," said Jackie Siekmann, a spokesman for Kroger's Columbus division, which includes northwest Ohio. "But we do have plans submitted. I guess you could kind of say we're working backwards," she added.

Kroger has been in negotiations for several months to obtain property for a supermarket at 1425 Reynolds Rd. It was the site of Ed Schmidt Auto Group, which closed in February, 2010.

The grocery chain has wanted a store in Maumee for years.

Should it build one, local commercial real estate experts say they expect Kroger would close a nearby store at Glendale Avenue and Reynolds Road.
