OfficeMax and Office Depot talk merger

Office Depot Inc. and OfficeMax Inc. are discussing a merger with a deal possible this week, both the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg News said.

Bloomberg reported the companies have discussed a potential stock swap that would create a single office-supply retailer to compete with Staples Inc.

A merger would create a company with nearly $18 billion in revenue; Staples had $25 billion in revenue in 2012.
