WBK gets a verbal from Indiana star

5/15/2008

The BGSU women s basketball team picked up a verbal commitment from Indiana recently. Here s the story from regionroundball.com.

"All she did was score 31 points in the state championship against the most famous current girls' hoops player in the state. No biggie -- 4A state title, MVP honors, state finals scoring record. Just another day on the court for Carmel junior Chrissy Steffen. But now those days on the court will extend beyond high school as the 5'11 guard has given a verbal commitment to Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

On the way to helping her team to a 23-4 record and her school's first ever state championship in girls basketball, Steffen averaged 19.4 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game as a junior. That stat line, together with her stupendous state finals performance, landed Steffen on the Junior All Star Core Team. She was also named All-MIC and the Indianapolis Star All-North Player of the Year. As a senior, Steffen will be the key to the Scott Bowen's offense with the loss of key seniors from this year's 4A state championship team.

When she graduates in 2009, Steffen, who also considered options at Ball State, Miami (OH) and Illinois State, will join a BGSU program that has established itself as one of the top mid-major programs in the country. Under head coach Curt Miller, the Falcons made their first-ever trip to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2007. And although the BGSU program was expected to be in rebuilding mode this past season, the Falcons finished 26-8 and 13-3 in the MAC.

Steffen, who will join Indianapolis Lutheran grad Laura Bugher at BGSU, plans to major in secondary education math or science.

By my calculations, there is one more scholarship available after Goldsberry leaves. I d have to believe it will be used in the 2012 class, unless Miller decides to sign a fourth member of the 2011 class.
