A hairy subject at camp

8/11/2008

I m of the opinion that in 2008 there are only two reasons for a man under the age of 30 to grow a mustache.

1. He works in the adult film industry.

2. He s being funny.

I m pretty sure Corey Partridge and Marques Parks don t aspire to be the next Dirk Diggler, so I m guessing that their growing of facial hair is purely humorous.

And humorous, it certainly is. Partridge s stache is dark and still a bit thin. Parks resembles Walt Frazier with his long, wide sideburns and bushiness above the lip.

Both of them look heinous, but I applaud their effort.

This isn t the only hairy situation at fall camp. (Sorry). Turns out Eric Ransom re-injured his knee Friday at practice. Coach Brandon said they are awaiting the results of an MRI, but obviously this doesn t sound good. Ransom is easy to cheer for. Talk to him for a minute and you realize how much pride he has. Such a shame.

Also, Derek Brighton is out 6-8 weeks after undergoing surgery on his ankle today. Coach Brandon believes the injury occurred during the summer and worsened once camp started.

Freshmen corners Marquese Quiles and Adrien Spencer worked with the first team at today s practice. Relax. Antonio Smith and Kenny Lewis are still the starters, but the coaches wanted to get Quiles and Spencer some work with the top defense. As has been the case all camp, freshman Keith Morgan is on the two-deep at safety along with Calvin Marshall who has moved back to safety from linebacker.

Lastly

Maybe I m overstating this, but the men s 400 swimming relay on Sunday evening ranks among my favorite sports moments ever. What else is on that list? OSU-Michigan 2006; USC-Texas in the National Championship; Kerri Strug at the 96 Olympics; Tiger at this year s U.S. Open.; LeBron vs. Detroit in 2007; me hitting two grand slams (over the fence) and throwing a one-hitter in the same little league game.
