Student of the Week: Matthew Ramlow

Matthew Ramlow, a senior from Waterville, plans to study environmental science or biology at an Ivy League university and to participate in their men's rowing program. He has been recruited by both Yale and Harvard universities. Matthew plans to pursue a career in conservation.

He enjoys math, ecology, and biology, and is ranked at the top of his graduating class with a 4.619 grade-point average. He was chosen Anthony Wayne Science Student of the Year and also holds the rank of Eagle Scout.

He has been a member of the Anthony Wayne crew team all four years of high school and captain the past two years. He has also been on the basketball team throughout high school and made varsity his junior and senior years. He is president of the National Honor Society, Student Council treasurer, and member of the environmental club and the Anthony Wayne Youth Challenge program.

Matthew has been a camp counselor for 6th grade camp for the last two years, is a member of the Boy Scouts and the Waterville United Methodist Church youth group, and has traveled on three mission trips. He has volunteered for Nature's Nursery, a local wildlife rehabilitation group, and also volunteers at the Toledo Metroparks.

"Matt is an exceptional student and person," said Jim Berta, English teacher. "His observations in class have served as catalysts for a number of quite interesting discussions.

"Not only is Matt a strong and motivated student, he is a valuable member of the student body who seeks out leadership roles. But, because of his personal traits, administration, faculty, and students hold him in the highest regard," Mr. Berta said.

"Anthony Wayne will truly miss Matt when he graduates this spring. Any university that he decided to attend will benefit because of his membership in the student body."

Matthew is the son of Eric and Patricia Ramlow.
