The Girl Scout gold award was presented to the following area high school seniors at an awards event that was held recently in Maumee.

The scouts are Katie Heider, Kelsey Smith, Carrie Powell, Chelsie Thomas, Lauren Wilhelm, and Rachael Zimmerman, all of Girl Scout Troop 79 of the Black Swamp Service Unit and all seniors at Bowling Green High School, and Michelle Simons of Whitehouse, a member of Girl Scout Troop 8000 of the Little Turtle Service Unit and a student at Anthony Wayne High School.

The Gold Award is Girl Scouting's highest honor.

Andrea Douglass, a junior medical technologies student at Clay High School in Oregon, was elected president of Ohio Skills USA at the state competition held recently in Columbus.

Some of her duties now involve running regional and state competitions and conferences, and representing Ohio at Skills USA National Conference in Kansas City this June.

Anthony Basko, a 1996 graduate of Northwood High School, was named Northwood alumnus of the year at the annual academic awards banquet at the school May 2.

Mr. Basko is an English teacher at the senior high school in the Tiffin Columbian School System.

He is also an assistant varsity football coach and assistant varsity baseball coach at the school.

He will receive his master's degree from Bowling Green State University in July.

Donald Saunders, former treasurer and chairman of the board of trustees of Mercy Health Partners in Toledo, has received Catholic Healthcare Partners' 2007 Founders' award for excellence in governance leadership.

He is a member of the finance committee of the board of the Toledo Area Chamber of Commerce.

Curtis Black, professor of clinical pharmacy at the University of Toledo, is the recipient of the 2007 Keys award of the Ohio Pharmacists Association.

Mr. Black was honored at the association's annual conference in Columbus.

He initiated the Ohio Research Forum in 1995 and has coordinated the event up to the present.

He is also a member of the board of trustees of the Ohio Pharmacists Foundation.

Owens Community College board of trustees member John Moore of Holland has been elected to a two-year term as at-large trustee of the Ohio Association of Community Colleges executive committee. The executive committee's eight leaders advocate the interests of the 23 member two-year colleges in Ohio.

Since April 2000, Mr. Moore has served as a board of trustee member at Owens Community College, and has held the position of vice chairman the past two years.

His background includes serving as the vice president of University Development at Bowling Green State University. He is also on the boards of the Hospice of Northwest Ohio, the Boys and Girls Club of Toledo, the Urban League of Northwest Ohio, and the American Red Cross.

Notre Dame Academy senior basketball players Whitney Shindorf of Delta, Sarah Clark and Angie Watkins of Toledo, and Hash Barton of Sylvania qualified for the all-academic basketball award as this year's basketball season came to an end.

The four seniors were presented with the City League all-academic honors at half time of the championship game held at Notre Dame Academy.

All-academic basketball award winners must be seniors, starters or letter winners, and must have a GPA of 3.0 or better over six semesters. Selections are not based on playing position.
