Two recent graduates of Lial Catholic Elementary School in Whitehouse have received special awards.

Ellen Anderson of Whitehouse received the Lial Parent Association Spirit Award, and Morgan Delp of Holland received the Sisters of Notre Dame Distinguished Graduate Award.

The students have also received the following scholarships: Ellen received the Marian Award, the Sullivan Award, and the Legacy Award from Notre Dame Academy, where she will be a student in the fall. Morgan received the Arthur and Eleanor Sullivan Scholarship, the Legacy Grant, Young Irish Scholars Scholarship, and the Delp Family South End Leadership Award, all from Central Catholic High School, where she will be enrolled this fall.

Noah Willis, a student at Swanton Middle School, has been named a United States National Award winner in leadership. Noah was nominated by his teacher Kimberly Floyd. He will be included in the Unites States Achievement Academy's Official Yearbook, which selects students on the basis of recommendations by teachers, coaches, counselors, and other qualified sponsors.

The following local high school students were selected to attend this year's Ohio Buckeye Girls State program that took place from June 17 to June 23 at Ashland University.

The students were part of a group of 900 selected girls from across Ohio who spent a week of intense study, campaigning for office, and running mock sessions. They are Katie Johnson, Chelsey McQueary, Pricilla Eick, Sarah Gale, Taylor Schmaltz, and Andrea Davis, all of Clay High School, and Jessicca Angelov of Toledo, a student at Waite High School.

Former Toledo resident Chris Minnich, a 1976 graduate of Rogers High School, has been named director of compensation for Wachovia Corporation in Charlotte, N.C. Mr. Minnich joined Wachovia in 2004 as head of compensation for the organization's corporate and investment bank. Prior to that he was a director of compensation in Toronto, supporting retail bank markets at Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.

Mr. Minnich graduated with a bachelor's degree in international relations from the University of Toledo and an MBA from Boston University.

Rachel Rossler of Oregon, a Clay High School graduate, was recognized as an outstanding student by the Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute in Wooster, Ohio. She was honored at ATI's student recognition banquet May 10.

She graduated June 9 with an associate of applied science degree in floral design and marketing. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa international honor society for two-year colleges, and is a recipient of the William J. Skou Scholarship. She was resident assistant of the Housing Community Council and helped organize the Ag Education Society's "Box City" event to raise awareness of the homeless. She has also been active in Artists de Fleur and the Landscape Club.

She completed her internship at Walt Disney World Florist in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., where she helped design and set up floral arrangements and dcor for weddings, special events, corporate conventions and hotel lobby arrangements.

Ottawa Hills High School 2007 graduates Greg Ely and Tyler Thompson recently received their Eagle Scout Awards in a court of honor at Epworth United Methodist Church.

Greg's Eagle project, completed in the fall of 2006, involved updating a meditation-prayer labyrinth at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in the Old West End. Greg added benches and landscaping to the labyrinth.

Tyler's project, completed in the summer of 2005, involved a week-long trip to Pine Island, Fla. to repair or replace the roofs of five homes damaged by Hurricane Dennis.
