Schools saving on energy costs

Turning off the lights after hours has helped the Anthony Wayne Schools save big bucks.

The district cut its net energy costs by more than $153,000 in the last year after hiring a national consultant to draw up and monitor a conservation program.

The $7,000 monthly cost to the school district "has more than paid for itself," said Charles Burns, Anthony Wayne's business manager.

District officials arrived at the net amount saved by taking the total energy cost reduction of $237,336 and subtracting the 12-month cost of the consultant, which came to $84,000.
